I am completing the Coast to Coast walk from St. Bees Head, Cumbria to Robin Hoods Bay, Yorkshire between the 30th June and 11th July 2008.

I will be following the Alfred Wainwright trail which encompasses the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales and the Yorkshire Moors. (190 miles)

I have decided to raise some money for the Alzheimer’s Society. I have chosen this charity because a very special person in my life contracted dementia and eventually passed away from its upsetting effects.

My grandmother Dorothy Harris passed away on December 27th 2006 after suffering for around two years with a form of dementia. This brain disease has many side effects such as loss of memory, mood swings and major communication problems that not only affect the patient but the whole family.

The Alzheimer’s society raise money to provide help and information for Demetia sufferers and their families, they also fund invaluable home care and day care facilities for sufferers. The specialist home care that is provided solely by the Alzheimer’s Society is seriously under funded in comparison with the amount of Dementia sufferers who contract a form of the disease each year.

Currently the only available treatments alleviate some of the early symptoms of dementia. There isn't a cure for dementia despite the £1.5 million the Alzheimer’s Society invests in their Quality Research in Dementia Programme.
