A Coventry Way Challenge · 17 April 2011

Children and adults with Down’s syndrome are all unique individuals with their own personalities, family backgrounds and preferences that make them who they are. We aim to create the conditions that all people with Down’s syndrome need to live full and rewarding lives.

Story

My challenge this year is to complete the 40 mile “Coventry Way” on Sunday April 17. This will involve walking and some running especially when the drink stations are coming up (is that what they call pubs?) on a circular route around Coventry. Starting in Meriden, the route passes through Berkswell, past Kenilworth and Stoneleigh, Ryton, Wolston, Brinklow, Ansty, past the edge of Bulkington and then past  Bedworth, Corley and back to Meriden. The route will cover roads, pathways, fields and any other sort of terrain you can imagine in Warwickshire. As always, my inspiration for raising money for the Down’s Syndrome Association is my nephew Daniel.

You burn the same amount of calories walking 40 miles as running a marathon. This is only half the challenge though; the other half is to raise money for a very good cause!

Around one in every 1,000 babies is born with Down's syndrome and women of any age or race can have a child with this genetic condition. It is caused by the presence of an extra chromosome. People with Down's syndrome need a little extra help to achieve their full potential. Although people with the syndrome have a degree of learning disability, most will walk and talk and many will read and write, go to ordinary schools and look forward to a semi-independent adult life. There are around 60,000 people with the syndrome in the UK.

The Down's Syndrome Association provides support, information, advice and counselling to people with Down's syndrome, their parents, carers, families and those with a professional interest.  It is a membership organisation with a network of affiliated volunteer support groups around the country.

With your help, the DSA can continue to give advice and support to thousands of people with Down’s syndrome, their families and their carers.
