Rabbie Burns Firewalk Challenge · 25 January 2020 ·

We're looking for brave 'soles' to help us raise funds whilst taking part in a challenge of a lifetime in Rosyth! Can you handle the heat and firewalk with SBH Scotland? This Burns night joing us for some bagpipes, haggis and firewalking!

Story

I will be taking part in SBH Scotland's Rabbie Burns Firewalk event where I will be walking over 20 feet of burning wood embers at 1236 degrees Fahrenheit! All money raised will go directly to ensuring that each individual in Scotland with Spina bifida and/or hydrocephalus lives the highest quality of life possible. SBH Scotland each year support over 4,000 individuals each year and without events like these they wouldn't be able to raise the money required to support each person.

The cause of Spina Bifida is unknown and every child has completely different needs. Spina Bifida is a spinal birth defect whereby the vertebrae and neural tube don't develop correctly. This leaves gap in the back where the spinal cord is vulnerable and can be damaged or not run down the entire spinal column. This most commonly happens in the vertebrae from the waist down. This can mean a number of issues for children such as no mobility, bladder and bowl issues, loss of feeling in feet or legs, learning difficulties and excess fluid around the brain that requires to be drained.

As some of you may know, my 6yr old son Luca has Spina Bifida. Like most children, he was diagnosed before birth at our 20 week scan. Coming to terms with this was stressful and confusing. Me and Vikki both felt a bit lost. It wasn't a disability we had heard of or know what to expect or how to manage this. At birth, Luca was sent to the Royal Hospital for Sick Children for surgery and we spent the first 2 weeks of his life there. This is where we met the charity.

In the past 6 years knowing them and receiving the support we have, Luca may be in a very different position he is now. At the age of 4, Luca needed further surgery on his spine. If this didn't happen he may not have been able to walk and his daily care needs may become so much more. Thankfully he is a happy, mobile 6yr old who loves football, swimming and annoying his mum and dad. His disability doesn't faze him one bit.

Any donation would be much appreciated and i'll make sure there is photos and videos posted of the event

thanks :)
