Story
One of the eco-church Lent water-themed challenges was to find out about ‘toilet twinning’. https://www.toilettwinning.org/
The St. John's church Harpenden eco-church group would like to request donations towards ‘twinning’ some (or all, if possible) of our 6 toilets within the church and hall buildings.
Toilet twinning is part of the Tear Fund organisation, providing families in parts of the world living in poverty with potentially life-saving toilet infrastructure and sanitation. The programme includes workshops helping families understand the link between poor sanitation and disease. Hygiene education – including the benefits of handwashing – is the precursor to any building work.
Local people are involved in the design and selection of materials used. They usually build their own toilets - this approach is seen as preferable to simply turning up to a village with materials and experts.
It costs an average of £60 to twin one toilet. We would receive a certificate that shows a photo of the overseas toilet twin and the GPS location.
