Story

For the second year running, we are taking the Macmillan Cancer Support Golf challenge with the aim of raising as much money and awareness as possible to this fantastic cause.

Last year we set ourselves a target of £2,000 for the four of us....  we finished up by raising an incredible £6,741.02!!  This was down the the incredible generosity and support from our friends, family and fellow members at Stoke Park.  It was one of the most memorable days in our calendars last year, so we aim to repeat that this year with adding another fourball to support us.  So we we will have 2 teams aiming to score high and raise even more money for the cause.  This year we will be doing the event on Sunday the 26th of June, so not only would we appreciate as many donations as possible, but support on the day really does make a difference so please come along and walk a few holes with us during the day.

So why are we doing it?  Like too many people, we have been effected by Cancer through the loss of a loved one.  Last year, my father was battling this dreadful disease after a miracle fight against pancreatic cancer.  Sadly he passed away only a few days after we were contacted by Macmillan to say that we were in the top 1% fundraisers for this event for the country.  As a keen golfer, I know he would have been very proud of what we achieved and would push me to do this each year for the support of the Macmillan nurses that helped both him and my mother in the final weeks of his life.

My partner in crime to help get make this event possible at Stoke Park is Director of Golf, Stuart Collier.  His personal motivation behind this event comes from the support they gave to his mother. In 2001 the Macmillan team nursed his mother Ann towards the end of her battle with ovarian cancer which she lost at the age of 50. Although this was a very difficult time for the family the help and support give by the nurses really made a huge difference. Being able to use golf as a vehicle to raise awareness and much needed funds for Macmillan is the perfect fundraiser for us all.

As previously mentioned, we have another team join us this year for are brisk 5am start, all of which have reasons behind doing this event.  As we do updates on money raised, we will tell the stories of why we are making this effort to support Macmillan.

Our target this year is at £5,000 although we secretly do want to hit five figures this year so we appreciate every amount given no matter how big or small.  This is a fantastic cause and the event itself is a great day for all involved.
