Story
The exhilaration of skydiving is as intense to the terror of an Eating Disorder.
On the 29th of March 2022 three generations of the Stratton family, Tony, R-J and Alfie will be skydiving for BEAT. This charity is very close to their hearts as Tony's grand-daughter, R-J's daughter and Alfie's sister, Maisie suffered from Anorexia Nervosa.
Eating disorders are serious mental illnesses that affect 1.25 million people across the UK with Anorexia having the highest mortality rate of any mental illness. With an average wait of three and a half years for specialist treatment, BEAT is an incredible charity that offer free services 365 days a year to help sufferers. Eating Disorders are not about food, but a way of coping when life is spiralling out of control.
Of all mental illnesses, Anorexia Nervosa has the highest mortality rate with 10% of all sufferers losing their life to this cruel disease
Maisie writes, "having experienced Anorexia first hand and spending time in hospital as an inpatient, BEAT is a charity very close to my heart. Without the help of specialist treatment I would not be in the place I am in today. I was lucky enough to get the help I needed but unfortunately so many people do not."
"Eating Disorders not only affect the sufferer but also hugely effect the friends and family surrounding them. I often felt an outsider during my years of Anorexia, as most social situations became daunting."
"I know my family also greatly suffered because of the pressures of dealing with such a consuming illness. It is so important that we talk about mental health in the same way we do physical health and help build a greater understanding of Eating Disorders and in turn greater help for everyone affected. I'm so grateful that three generations of my family will be skydiving to fundraise for such a wonderful charity"
"Beat provide support and services for individuals suffering from Eating Disorders across the UK, help educate families, and save the lives of individuals with the work they do. I want to help others who are where I once was. Every individual suffering from an Eating Disorder deserves recovery, and funding Beat allows this to be an option for people all around the country."
"It's never easy asking for donations, especially with how the world is right now. I mean it when I say donations of any size are greatly appreciated. If you can't afford anything, sharing this post will go a long way or even just visiting the BEAT website and educating yourself about Eating Disorders would mean so much."
