The Luton and Dunstable Hospital
In the UK, every 5 minutes someone will have a Stroke
The L&D’s Stroke Unit provides specialist medical and rehabilitation services to hundreds of people every year. The unit manages patients admitted as emergencies as well as transfers from other hospitals as it’s the regions designated hospital for Thrombolysis. Thrombolysis is a ‘clot-busting’ drug used to try and stop more damage to the brain in the early stages of a Stroke occurring. This form of treatment is not appropriate for all patients as Stroke affects everybody differently.
Whilst all patients suffer differently they will all need to spend a long time in hospital afterwards, making sure they are well enough and have the right support before they go home. Rehabilitation is crucial to recovery as many patients will need to learn how to do certain things again. For the most part, rehabilitation will take part in hospital.
Studies show that the surroundings people are cared for in have an impact both on the speed and quality of their recovery. We want to create a healing environment where patients feel safe, comfortable and as relaxed as possible.
Specialist chairs beside each bed will provide patients with the appropriate and comfortable support they need whilst going through recovery. The chairs are higher, wider with more space and can be positioned appropriately for each patient. The unit will need 20 of these chairs and they cost £150 each.
