Event: Zermatt to Verbier 2022, on 21 March 2022
Our team of six - Gary, Sarah, Sarah, Mike, David and Nick - are aiming to raise over £50,000 for Doctors in Distress and The Intensive Care Society by taking on the famous 'Patrouille des Glaciers Route' challenge for ICU heroes.

Story

Zermatt to Verbier 2022 is in aid of both Doctors in Distress and the Intensive Care Society. All funds raised will be split equally between the two charities at the end of April 2022.

Inspired by the Billy Connolly line “…how does the person who drives the snowplough get to work…” who helps those who help the rest of us?

Well, ‘Doctors in Distress  and ‘Intensive Care Society’ are two organisations who are committed to helping healthcare workers whenever they need support.

When I heard about this project it seemed like a great opportunity to get involved and do something positive to help those in some small way who help the rest of us.

We all rely on those in healthcare, more often than not when we, or those close to us need them most. This was more than highlighted by the Covid-19 pandemic but also by a recent case of terminal illness of a Family member. Health care workers seem to be there, providing unfaltering support and care no matter the circumstances and without any hesitations, remaining calm on the surface and letting us easily forget that they are only human, too.  Who like everybody might need support to help them deal with the challenges their job throws at them so that they can carry on helping the rest of us.

By joining this challenge, I hope that I can raise awareness and support the medical professionals when they require support to continue providing the level of health service we all take so easily for granted and try to help keeping the snowplough drivers get to work.

Using the International standard for measurement the challenge will see the team complete vertical ascent in excess of 5km, thats almost the same as the height of 1200 London Double Decker Busses and distance of almost 60km or the same as 1200 lengths of an Olympic swimming pool the other seemingly standard metric! According to Wikipedia this is equivalent to 110km without the altitude difference, Im not going to find a comparison for this, but it sounds a very long way!!

Any donation would be amazing and just to be clear, all of the funds raised will go to the two charities and absolutely none of it goes towards getting me to the alps.

Doctors in distress – are dedicated to reducing stress and burnout in
healthcare workers by working to provide mental wellbeing support for all healthcare workers across the UK though confidential, facilitated  peer support groups. Additionally they are
committed to influencing culture change within the NHS.

Intensive Care Society  - Intensive care staff care
