Story
We are running the London Landmarks Half Marathon on Sunday 25 March 2018.
This is the culmination of five months of fundraising activity.
On Monday 13th March 2017, three weeks before his 13th birthday, James Baird was rushed to Nottingham's Queen's Medical Centre and diagnosed with Type1 diabetes.
Prior to this, over a few weeks James had dramatically lost weight. He became lethargic, would sleep a lot and couldn't finish his food. Type1 diabetes is a chronic auto-immune disease and is currently incurable and a life-long condition. It cannot be managed with diet control, it requires insulin as the pancreas cannot function. It isn't self-inflicted and we have no family history of diabetes.
Over a few days, under the care of the fantastic Nottingham Children's Hospital and the NUH paediatric diabetes team, James began to feel better again after being being very unwell for weeks.
Within a few days he became part of the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund) project, looking at the 'artificial pancreas' which will help children and young people across the UK and the world lead normal lives.
This clinical trial means he has to wear an insulin pump and a 'closed loop' monitor which records his blood sugar levels 24/7. The research could lead to a vital breakthrough and revolutionise the lives of Type1 sufferers.
By supporting us you are supporting James and young people and children all across the world. Please give generously.
