Why Prostate Cancer UK
I hadn’t set out to do the Camino for a charity when I heard the calling for it back in February. However in the July, my dad was diagnosed with prostate cancer.
It is the most common form of male only cancer and their biggest killer of all the diseases. Thanks to the great work from the NHS, my dad was fortunate to have a successful procedure to remove his prostrate and the recent test results have given him a clean bill of health. Best christmas gift anyone could ask for.
I had already set my mind on the Camino but at the request of my dad, I am now seeking sponsorship for Prostate Cancer UK, to help fund more research and many more christmases for those affected by this horrible disease.
Camino de Santiago
The 500 mile trek is originally a pilgramage to the tomb of the aspostle St. James (Camino = Way, Santiago = St. James).
The route I am taking is the Camino de Frances, it starts in St. Jean Pied de Port on the French side of the Pyranees. The destination is Santiago de Compostela in North West Spain.
I will be scaling the Pyranees, slogging through the Spanish Meseta then finally crossing the hills of Galicia into Santiago. It takes on average 4.5 weeks to complete which includes a couple of rest days! I’m not setting a time limit as making the 500 miles is the challenge.
The only two rules for this journey are:
1) I will only walk (no transport other than my own feet))
2) I will be unsupported (I will carry everything myself)
I aim to do a blog for my journey and the preparation to keep everybody informed. I’ve set my total as 500 quid to get at least a pound a mile.
