This amazing team made up of some my friends and relatives (Stuart Jerden, Simon Wallace, Fiona Hawley, Barbara Buczek, Nigel Bodell, Phil Dunford, Jason Ransley and Jim Gleeson) are undertaking the Three Peaks Challenge on the weekend of 31st August 2012. This gruelling challenge involves climbing the three highest peaks in the UK: Snowdon (1085m) in Wales; Scafell Pike (978m) in England and Ben Nevis (1344m) in Scotland - all in under 24 hr. (http://www.thethreepeakschallenge.co.uk/). I am rooting for you all xxx
I am incredibly humbled that since my diagnosis with Amyloidosis (AL type) in February this year, so many friends and family have pledged support to try to raise the profile of the disease and funds for further research. Amyloidosis is usually fatal and until quite recently most patients died within a year or so of diagnosis (a sobering thought at an age of only 44), but improvements in clinical management do now often significantly improve survival. The UCL National Amyloidosis Centre services the whole country and since 1999 has built expertise which is unparalleled elsewhere in the world. The resources provided by the Amyloidosis Research Fund through the generosity of donors undoubtedly makes major contributions to alleviating the suffering and saving the lives of many thousands of individuals afflicted by this terrible and hitherto incurable disease.(http://www.ucl.ac.uk/medicine/amyloidosis/nac).
Our specific aim is to provide the Centre with funds towards a much needed piece of equipment called a Coverslipper Machine which will help the histologists to prepare both clinical and research slides but costs £23,000.
I would personally be immensely grateful if you would pledge your support and encouragement to the team - not least of all because any advances made towards a cure for Amyloidosis will give me more opportunity to see the team fulfill further challenges ahead :o) !!!
Thank you for your donations and words of support which are greatly appreciated.
Particular thanks at this time go to Danny of CMW Group for his generous donation of the minibus (CMW can be found at http://www.cmw-group.com/); and to our two volunteers to drive and provide ground support.
Very best wishes, Joanna Jerden.
P.S. Please pray for a cure!!! :o)
