Story
Once again Allan and I are undertaking another cycling challenge. However, this is undoubtedly the biggest yet. Move over Vesuvius or Ventoux....this is serious!
On June 25th at 6am we'll be cycling out of Falmouth in Cornwall headed for London. The ride is an Audax (an unsupported cycle ride following a route with checkpoints.) This particular Audax is called Ride The Trafalgar Way and follows a 500km/312 mile route from Falmouth to the Admiralty Building in London. It follows the route a messenger, Lapenotiere, took on the 4th November 1805 to deliver the news of the Victory of the battle of Trafalgar and the death of Nelson. However, Lapenotiere had the luxury of horse and carriage (of which he changed 21 times to get there as fast as possible) we'll just have two wheels and each other.....let's hope our marriage survives!
Oh, and there's 6000m/18,000ish ft of climbing.......Oh and the cut off time is 33 hours and 20 mins! So we will be riding through the night. Why, I hear you ask, are we doing this? Perhaps because we're a bit insane, but also to push ourselves to see if we can achieve something like this. When we entered it wasn't with the intent to raise money however it is too good of an opportunity to resist. So if you find yourselves donating then please know I am truly very, very grateful.
Why Cancer Research? For those who don't know, I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer in April 2019 and after treatment of chemotherapy, surgery and radiotherapy, 10 months later I was cancer free and out the other side. However, I'm one of the lucky ones, to me it seems like a bad dream but so many people are still living that nightmare every day. It doesn't just effect them but their loved ones too who have to be strong even when their world seems to be falling apart. Cancer Research UK, is working tirelessly to develop new treatments and hopefully one day will beat cancer.
During chemo, the highlight of my three week routine was going for a bike ride with my Mum during my 'good' week. It was only 10 miles or so and a fraction of the speed I was used to but it was an hour or so of freedom, an hour of not being a cancer victim, an hour where I could do one of the things that makes me happy. It will be memories like these that will get us to the Admiralty Building in London.....I hope!
