Why MHAT-UK? 

Mental illness and poverty make for a tragic combination in India. The sight of homeless mentally people on the streets abandoned by family/community is a common one. What's unique about MHAT's approach is its reliance on community volunteers to provide help to these patients. This tackles stigma, unlocks the resources within the community and provides help in the community not in an institution. Dr. Manoj Kumar, my colleague from the UK, has taken the brave step of setting his community psychiatric service in Kerala. His canvas is bold but one that has already made a real difference to the lives of 1500 patients so far. Thousands more need his help in Kerala alone. Your pounds will allow more outreach services to be set-up using trained psychologists, social workers and community volunteers. This project deserves to succeed.
