River Arun Swim · 6 September 2020 ·

Every two hours someone in the UK is paralysed by a spinal cord injury. It can happen to anyone at any time and no one is prepared for how it will change their life. Aspire is a national charity that provides practical help, supporting spinal cord injured people from injury to independence.

Story

Thank you very much for visiting my 2020 JustGiving page.

In February 2019 I had a hip replacement, which was wonderful, but this was followed by four months of severe sciatica. Nevertheless I managed to swim 100 miles in lakes and pools in fourteen weeks to raise more than £1,400 for Aspire by Christmas. In 2020 I want to continue raising money for this amazing charity, which supports people with spinal injuries: my swimming challenge for this year is to swim 6.5km along the River Arun on Sunday 20th September – that's nearly four times the distance of my longest single swim in 2019! My training began in earnest in February with a week's intensive training on a swimming holiday in Lanzarote. It went on hold during the Coronavirus lockdown from March to May but is now back on track. I got back into Lake 86 the day it opened. Many of the events I entered to build up my swimming stamina over the summer months have been cancelled so I have had to come up with an alternative plan!

To cheer me on and to support Aspire, please sponsor me.
