Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Hi! I’m Lucy, an almost 40 year old mother of two, romantic novelist and Mental Health paralegal living with an entirely deceased pancreas.

In October 2018, a week before turning 37, I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. My brother has lived with Type 1 since his early twenties and this chronic, cruel and incurable disease is often diagnosed in childhood, so I honestly believed I'd dodged that bullet. Alas, I'm in the 2% of people diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes post age 25.

I can only describe living with this disease as a constantly played game of chess, it's never off your mind and your competitor is far superior to you. It's frustrating, time consuming and at times downright depressing. In short, it's something I wouldn't wish on my own worst enemy.

On 13th April 2021 I awoke with a terrible desire to do something. I say terrible, because my stab at running only began in December 2020 and I only graduated the couch to 5k programme in February 2021!

I swiftly opted to run the Great North Run in aid of Diabetes UK, a charity I supported by asking my colleagues to donate rather than send Christmas cards in the year I was diagnosed.

I'm hoping the money you all raise will go to improving available treatments and make diabetes more manageable. Not just for me, but the 4.8 million people in the UK who have diabetes. This is equal to one in 14 people. Someone is diagnosed with diabetes every two minutes.

If you're here, thinking of sponsoring me to complete this half-marathon, it's not merely the 13.1 gruelling miles you are sponsoring, it's the hours and hours of training and miles I'll put in before the big day. So, please cheer me on and give me a reason to keep going before the 12th of September! If you can't afford to donate, please follow my training at and support me in that way! I'd be eternally grateful:

It might be dull as dishwater...or I might fall off the treadmill...AGAIN!

Thanks for reading and I hope to see you on the blog! :)
