A few weeks ago we started training to do our 10K Walk Do-it-for-charity SuperHero walk in Regents Park, on 13 May 2012.

 We intend to raise money for Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP) (www.map-uk.org) and to raise the profile of MAP worthy work. We also want to raise the awareness of the daily life of the Palestinians in the West Bank (WB), Gaza & refugees camps in Lebanon. We are in this fortunate position that we want to make life a little be more tolerable to the unfortunate millions under occupation and in refugee camps.

 “To raise money for 10 children’s burn units in villages in the WB”

Read one of the headlines in a fund raising dinner organized by MAP a year or two ago.

Children’s burns units? In few of the West Bank’s villages? What a waste of money; we wondered! Lots of small units? For children?  Is that fair, children only?.

After some discussion, we made up our minds “better to support only one big centre of excellence”, of course, it will serve a large mixed population. Zuhair announced.

“Definitely; we will tell them how it should be done!” Suha responded. We nodded our heads reassuringly, confirming our mutual agreement.

 It is only later on when the presentations started that we realized that due to electricity power cuts that families use petrol latrines for life to continue at night and for their children to study. Accidentally spilling petrol and causing major increase in fires and burns especially to children sometimes only few years old. That is a major disaster to the family and a life changing event to the unfortunate child.

“Rush him to the major hospital, quickly” I hear you say, “It cannot be more than ten minutes drive”

 “Ah yes but what about the suffocating check-points of the Israel arm on the road out of the village?” the experience first aider would respond. There; even ambulances are made to wait at the whim of the Arm unit, at times for more than 6 to 8 hours until the crossing is allowed, The child condition tend therefore to reach hospitals at a much later and worse state than would have been.

What a waste of a potentially happy and aspiring life.

This week “3 children were burnt to death in Gaza” was one of the local newspapers headline. Fire caused by the use of candles due to power cuts. Not an uncommon headline.
