The final year Diagnostic Radiography students training at Arrowe Park Hospital and studying at the University of Liverpool usually raise awareness of the role of the radiographer and raise funds for a charity on world radiography day each November. This year, due to COVID restrictions, The students and the radiography team, decided to raise awareness of suicide, due to the current incline in suicide rates, particularly in key workers.

We will be working with ‘The Martin Gallier Project’ based in the North West area which aims to prevent suicides and to provide support for families. Close to 800,00 people die by suicide every year, furthermore, for each suicide , there are more than 20 suicide attempts. Suicide and suicide attempts have a ripple effect that impacts upon families, friends, colleagues, communities and societies. Suicides are preventable. Much can be done to prevent suicide at individual, community and national levels.

As students who have never experienced anything similar to COVID, they were all very anxious about returning to placement for their clinical training as they did not know what to expect, or how unwell the patients were going to be. They were also worried about the impact it would have on them and their families. As a cohort, they have found the experience quite daunting and mentally draining at times as they had to balance university work with clinical placement. This, alongside the stress of COVID has also made the situation very overwhelming.

Their time on placement has highlighted how important mental health awareness is and how important it is to talk to others about our thoughts and feelings during difficult times. With the support of each other and the team of Radiographers at the hospital, they have been able to adapt to the new situation and overcome some of their worries.

In the place of a graduation ceremony and celebration, we are as a team planning a charity event to take place in July 2021 to celebrate the end of their studies and to also say goodbye to their deputy clinical tutor Emma (me) as she moves on from her role in the dept. The 2nd year Uni of Liverpool Radiography students in training are also attempting the Y3Peaks challenge with us.

We aim to raise awareness of the Role of the Radiographer in the hospital particularly as the imaging department has played such a vital role throughout the covid crisis and also raise money for Suicide Awareness, further details are available at ‘The Martin Gallier Project’ website.
