Story

Can you help Tibbs this summertime?

Here at Ferndown Homing Centre we have treated a number of cats suffering with a condition known as Hyperthyroidism over the years.   A condition that often affects older cats.

Hyperthyroidism is a treatable condition with the cat requiring extra care, time and medical attention to help them move towards becoming ready to start looking for their new forever home.

Our latest cat going through treatment for Hyperthyroidism is Tibbs.

Tibbs came into our care back in April 2021 when her owner passed away.   She arrived underweight, with scabby skin and a very thin coat caused by an allergy to fleas.  She was also in need of a dental.   Gradually with lots of TLC Tibbs started to gain weight and her scabby skin resolved with the aid of veterinary strength flea treatment and a course of steroids.
Our vets took a blood sample to check how her general functions were looking to make sure they were happy she was well enough to  have the dental she needed, and her dental was carried out back in May.

This all healed very nicely and we were very excited that she was all set to start looking for her new home but just as we started taking interest in her we noticed she had started to show signs of Hyperthyroidism, which can include symptoms such as:

* Weight loss

* Increased appetite

* Increased drinking and urinating

* Increased activity level - frantic/rushing around

* Increased vocalisation

* Presence of a goitre (a swelling in the neck)

Our vets took another blood sample to recheck this and it sadly confirmed our suspicions of Hyperthyroidism so bless her she had to stop her search for a new home and instead start medication to stabilise this with a view to surgery.

Tibbs’s thyroid levels have stabilised beautifully over the past weeks meaning we can now look for her to have an operation called a Bilateral Thyroidectomy, removing the thyroid completely, which would be much better for her in the long run health wise.

Thyroidectomies cost hundreds of pounds, with this one operation alone estimated at £600.00.

With many of our fundraising opportunities still on hold due to the ongoing risks around Covid19 we are asking for your help to raise money for Tibbs this summertime.   If you would like to help Tibbs on her road to recovery please make a donation by clicking on the ‘donate here’ button above.

Please note should we be fortunate enough to raise any funds in addition to the amount needed for Tibbs and her treatment and ongoing care, this would be used to help other cats in our care.

Thank you for visiting Tibb’s JustGiving page and for reading her story, and thank you too for your help and support.
