Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Between 20th-23rd of May 2019, I will be driving to every Tesla Supercharging location in the UK using my electric car to raise awareness of the effect that vehicle emissions have on our health and the environment and to highlight the practicalities of modern electric vehicles.  This will require covering over 2100 miles in less than four days: from Cornwall to Kent to the Highlands of Scotland.

There are three aspects which are important to me:

- Vehicle emissions damage public health and the environment.
- Modern electric vehicles are very practical.
- This should be challenge!!

Vehicle emissions:

A young girl called Charlotte (see links below) leaves notes on the windscreens of electric vehicles thanking their owners for driving an EV and helping children to breathe easier and avoid life threatening illnesses. Tesla Motor's primary mission is to accelerate the transition to fully sustainable energy production and transportation.  I am combining these two by taking a Tesla Model S to each of the 51 Tesla Supercharging stations in the UK and in doing so, raise money for the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation.

Tesla vehicles are 100% electric and therefore have zero emissions. The electricity for my Tesla is sourced from zero or low carbon sources (solar, wind, hydro, nuclear).  The manufacturing of the vehicle, while not carbon neutral, has a far lower impact on the environment than the manufacture of an internal combustion engine driven car - even when accounting for battery manufacture.  It is important for our own health and our environment that we move to fully sustainable transportation as quickly as possible, and for cars that will most likely be electric and/or hydrogen powered propulsion.

In my Tesla, I will be covering over 2000 miles without a single mg of exhaust emissions or CO2 production.

The practicalities of Electric Vehicles (EVs):

There is a lot of misinformation in the media around the capabilities of modern EVs, which in reality are now a very practical, affordable and safe alternative to petrol and diesel cars.  Range is often the number one question asked to EV drivers, the time taken to charge is the second.  Covering over 2100 in under four days should help to demonstrate that modern EVs are very capable for covering large distances in short timeframes, and all without leaving a carbon footprint.

The personal challenge:

I can be blighted by bouts of tiredness because I have reactive hypoglycaemia - low blood sugar through the overproduction of insulin. It doesn't present a danger to my driving but it does make this adventure that much more challenging.  I will ensure I will remain safe at all times which means I may need to stop for a ten minute nap from time to time.  That makes meeting the four day target very difficult but I think it’s really important that I do this.
