4x4x48 Challenge by David Goggins · 6 March 2021

Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) is a charity set up in 1990 by people sick of seeing the ocean they love polluted. We campaign to protect the ocean and all it makes possible, by taking action on the ground that triggers change from the top. We're calling for an end to sewage and plastic pollution.

Story

The 4x4x48 challenge involves running 4 miles every 4 hours for 48 hours running a total of 48 miles in 2 days! This challenge was made by former navy seal David Goggins the toughest man on the planet, he has designed this challenge to suck and mentally challenge you. Now this is already going to be a challenge, but we want to make it more about surfers against sewage, so we will be running it in wetsuits and picking up as much rubbish as possible along the way, running through as many local seaside towns as we can.

As I am sure you are all aware plastic in our oceans is becoming a bigger and bigger problem! It is estimated that by 2050 our oceans will contain more plastic than fish! So we all need to get into fish breeding?? No. The only way this number will change is if we all do our bit to reduce the amount of plastic that ends up in the ocean! So please donate!! If you can't donate I encourage you to walk, jog, run or cycle just 1 mile and pick up 1 piece of rubbish. if just 300 people did this every day for a 1 year we would have saved around 500kg of rubbish which is the same weight as a camel!

Our target is £480 because who doesn't love the sound of raising £480, running 48 miles in 48 hours. But ideally, we would love to reach £500 as that would be enough to provide a surfers against sewage beach clean box to a UK community.

The official event starts March 5th 8pm pst which is March 6th 4am UK time, during the day we will be running through sea side towns and would be great to get as many people involved as possible! Once we have the route planned we will post it on this page and on our social media. @surfboardsukltd

Training-

So as of right now, we are purely armed to face this challenge with sheer grit and determination, our longest run currently sits at a measly 4.5miles!!

Week 1 -  we ran 2 half marathons and a full marathon in just the first 4 days of training. over the next few days did a couple of 5 mile runs and ended on Sunday with a 10mile run focusing on hills

Week 2 - this week we focused more on doing stuff that sucked! We'll be honest after running the marathon so early on into training our heads inflated and running took a bit of a back seat this week but we still challenged ourselves none the less! We ran in 5mm winter wetsuits, one day we spent the whole day in wetsuits and started with a wetsuit run and finished with another wetsuit run. Also ran in a soaking wet wetsuit and ran 4.5 miles up and down some massive sand dunes!

Week 3 - Back to running this week. Started with a marathon that involved about 10miles of coastal paths and 1mile up and down some sand dunes for good measure, that one sucked! Next day ran another 20miles and ran 10 miles every day for the rest of the week after that to hit a week total of 100miles.

We are uploading clips of our training on our social media if you want to join our journey!

Please share around with as many people as possible! :)
