Carers Thames Walk 2013 · 25 May 2013 ·

Sutton Carers Centre (SCC) supports people who care for family members or friends unpaid. This could mean supporting a disabled child, a husband with dementia, or a sister with mental health problems; a young carer could be looking after a parent with MS or a sibling with autism. SCC provides advice, information, support, therapies and breaks, so that carers can stay well and supported too.

Our Story

Thank you for taking the time to visit Sutton Carers Centre's JustGiving page for the Carers Thames Walk.

We hope to raise as much money as possible, and to use the funds to make a difference to the lives of unpaid carers who either live in the London Borough of Sutton, or care for someone who lives in the London Borough of Sutton.

We all will be carers, or be cared for, at some point in time.  And many of our friends and neighbours care for loved ones every day, unpaid, often sacrificing many aspects of their own lives.  Please help us recognise what young and adult carers do in our communities - and help raise funds locally to ensure that carers get time out and support, too.

Some of the ways we try to make a difference for carers include: Providing access to complimentary therapies, such as massage, aromatherapy and reflexology.  Help to maximise income, through benefit checks and assistance with funding applications.  We offer information and advice to carers through our telephone support service, and drop in centre.  As well as running peer support groups and referring carers and their families for talking therapies.  As well as much more to help increase carers capacity and resilience in their caring role.

Some carers find juggling work and their caring responsibilities difficult, sometimes resulting in them needing to leave work to focus on their caring role.  This can often cause financial hardship.  Your donations will ensure that all carers, irrespective of their financial situation, can benefit from the services we offer.  We will use funds to help carers to attend workshops, day trips, free complementary therapy, and take part in social celebrations to help them have a break from their caring role, avoid isolation, and build resilience.

Last year Kim Baxter-Derrington, Amanda Baxter and Terry Baxter walked for Sutton Carers Centre and raised £828 on their own JustGiving page.  They were motivated to join the Carers Thames Walk because of their first-hand experience of the support received from Sutton Carers Centre, and this is what they had to say last year:

‘Without the Sutton Carers Centre frankly, we'd all be basket cases now and more than likely, a family in meltdown.

It's still 'orrible - but we've got them as our safety net, which is why one way or another we're up for helping the Centre raise funds to let others out there in communities right across London know that:

a) they're not alone

b) there is real help available

c) caring for someone doesn't have to be an isolating, utterly shattering experience

d) "carers" come in all shapes, sizes and ages (from 7 to 77)

And your help will give Carers' Centre networks across London badly needed funds to yell that (nicely of course) from the rooftops...

Ta-muchley..!! x’ (Quote from Baxter-Derrington Family JustGiving homepage 2012)
