Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page

I am running the London Marathon to raise funds for the Geoff Shirley Leukaemia fund. I have spent most of my life trying to avoid any sort of exercise but have now caught the running bug big time! I have been given the opportunity to acheive a dream that i never thought possible and at the same time raise money for some very special people whose strength and determination never cease to amaze and inspire me. I have spent hours training in the dark, after work in the snow, rain and gail force wind but will need all that determination and strength to complete the full 26.2 mile course ahead of me.

The Geoff Shirley fund was set up nearly 20 years ago for the haematology department at wycombe hospital. Geoff Shirley was a patient who suffered from leukaemia, when he died his family were keen to start a fund to raise money to improve facilities and treatment for patients with leukaemia and related diseases at the hospital. I have worked on the haematology dept at Wycombe hospital for 15 years now and have seen how money raised from the fund has enhanced the care of haematology patients.

Many of our patients spend long periods of time in protective isolation because of the problems their disease and treatments cause to their immune systems. The fund has had a big impact on the quality of life of these patients raising money to fund a number of projects from fridges, televisions, video entertainment for isolation rooms, The fund has also brought medical equipment such as ultrasound equipment to assist in the insertion of hickman lines often required to administer some intensive chemotherapy and has helped fund specialist staff. More recently money raised from last years london marathon has funded the installation of wifi in the haemotology ward.
