Story
As you may know my daughter was born in Oct 2018 with various heart defects (CHD) that was not diagnosed till she was months old. At 8 weeks old the GP found a heart murmur and in Feb 2019 we were officially diagnosed with CHD - 3 VSD's (holes in the heart), Double outlet right ventricle and pulmonary stenosis. She has a PA band fitted that was done in March 2019 and she is waiting for Open Heart Surgery. CHD is common with around 1 in 125 babies being born with a heart defect but it is still life threatening. CHD is still the leading cause of deaths among infants.
For heart week this year I am going to attempt to "Dance from Kilwinning to Glasgow". - 27miles (54k steps) through dancing.
The money will go to Tiny Tickers, a UK charity that helps train sonographers to spot CHD at mums 20 week scans and raises money to put pulse oximetry machines in maternity wards. These machines are so simple and quick to use and will show the oxygen levels in newborns but they are not mandatory. If they were my wee warrior would have been diagnosed sooner and got the care she needed. 1000 babies leave hospital every year with an undiagnosed heart problem. These conditions can be fatal. The work Tiny Tickers does aims to give every baby a fighting chance at life.
A baby is born with a serious heart condition every two hours in the UK and despite congenital heart disease being one of the biggest killers of infants, only around half of congenital heart defects are picked up during routine prenatal scanning. With your help we can provide a safety net for the 1,000 babies each year that leave hospital with their heart defect undetected, increasing detection rates, improving a baby’s chances of survival and long-term quality of life.
