Glasgow's Support Our Veterans Fund · 16 August 2012

SVR was established in 1910 to provide accommodation and support for ex-Service men and women of all ages who are homeless, isolated or in need. We have residences in Edinburgh, Dundee and Glasgow. We aim to help as many veterans as possible who are in need for as long as that need is there.

Story

Thank you for visiting Glasgow's Support our Veterans Fund

What is it all about?

This fund is to build an exciting entirely new development:  new build and new concept – a real step change in the service provision for veterans in Glasgow.  51 flats specifically for those young men and women coming out of our armed forces with no job, low educational attainments, health problems.  The facilities and staff to tackle the health issues, get veterans back into education, get them into work and ultimately get them back into stable, fulfilling lives.

Why are we doing this?  SVR has been looking after veterans for 102 years.  For many years it was the older ex-servicemen, but in recent years we started to see younger residents, battling mental health issues, unable to find work or an affordable home. And often these veterans were in their 30s and 40s , had been out of the forces for 8-10 years of struggling, feeling desperate, with no one to turn to.  All too often this resulting in serious addictions and suicide attempts.  And only then, when they couldn’t get much lower, did they find SVR and start getting the help they needed.

We want to change that.  We want to get in early, as soon as a serviceman leaves, to get our support in there straight away.

Bellrock Crescent in Cranhill is the site we have chosen – affordable, but with good links to the city centre and good local amenities.     The build in due to start next month and we are aiming to have the first veterans at the start of 2014.

And to achieve this we need you.  Let’s work together, to protect our proud and brave veterans. Donate what you can and we will make sure that Glasgow repays it's debt to those who have served so well.
