What I’m Doing?

I will be swimming 5km which is 200 lengths of a 25m pool to raise
money for Mermaids.

I plan to attempt this on 20^th December 2021 and will track my swim using SWIMTAG

Why Mermaids?

Transgender, non-binary and gender diverse children and teenagers need support and understanding, and the freedom to explore their gender identity. Mermaids is committed to helping children and their families with the challenges they may face because every young person deserves to live a full and happy life.

Mermaids are close to my heart, it’s important to me as a trans woman because growing up I never had the support and resources that Mermaids offer and if by swimming I can help children today not to have to go through what I did then it’s the very least I can do.

Mermaids support…

- Reduces isolation and loneliness for transgender, nonbinary and gender-diverse children, young people and their families.

- Provides families and young people with the tools they need to negotiate education and health services.

- Helps young people to cope better with mental and emotional distress, and equips their parents with what they need to offer individual support.

- Improves the self-esteem and social skills of children and young people.

- Improves awareness, understanding and practices of teachers, GP’s, CAMHS, Social Services and other professionals.

About Me

I’m Danielle, I started transitioning in 2020 after a lifetime of hiding and battling with myself. Having the freedom to be myself has made me so happy and it is by far the best thing I could have done for myself, both mentally and physically.

Swimming has always been something I have enjoyed and been quite good at. After transitioning I thought it would be a long time before I felt I could have the confidence to swim again but here I am doing it after 18 months. I have felt fully accepted at my local pool and I want to show that Trans people shouldn’t have to miss out on these activities because we have just as much of a right to be there as anyone else. If I can do that while raising money for a charity I care about, like Mermaids then all the better!
