Story

NOT TOO LATE TO DONATE!

UPDATE ON THE RACE:

So, we gave it everything but after I had a bad fall 90 mins in and freezing waters, we did another 4 hours with blood coming out my wetsuit! Just missed the last cut off by 5 mins - Had to get stitches in my arm in the Med tent after - the wetsuit was holding it together!! We did 6 out of 8 swims - many other teams abandoned.
It was super cold - some guys were pulled out with hypothermia!! Locals said it was even colder than usual. Swimming thru the seaweed was tough! A stunning but brutal race!
We took miniature Remy Martin brandies for after the finish so toasted the little man and warmed us up!!
We think Jay would be proud of our effort and thank you all so much for your support and donations xxxx

In June 2017 we tragically lost my daughter Sam’s fiancée Jay aged just 28, who passed away whilst out for a run on his first Father’s Day from a sudden cardiac arrest, leaving Sam and my little grandson Remy aged 8 months.  Jay didn't come home that day and our families lives changed forever.  Jay wasn’t aware but he had a heart condition called Right Ventricular Arrhythmogenic Cardiomhyopathy (ARVC).

The family have set up a charity called Jay’s AIM to help reduce the number of young people suffering sudden cardiac death in the South West – an area Jay lived in and loved.

The AIM stands for Assess, Inform and Make a Difference – the charity is already making a difference!  They are promoting local cardiac screening sessions, providing free CPR/AED training and supplying defibrillators (AED’s) to venues in need across the South West.

We have decided to do a massive endurance Swimrun challenge on June 9th to raise funds for Jay’s AIM, in Jay’s memory – the Isles of Scilly World Series Swimrun, an event that will take us around 8 hours! All competitors race in teams of 2 – our team name is “4Jay’sAIM”

In the endurance sport of Swimrun there are no transitions, as in a triathlon, so we will be swimming from island to island in our trainers and running across the islands in our wetsuits with 18 miles running and 5 miles swimming!  It’s the longest event we have ever done and a huge challenge as Mogsy could only run a mile 7 months ago, following a slipped disc and a foot injury.

We are finding the training tough – we are getting older – at 56 and 62 we are sure we will be the oldest competitors!  The water will be COLD with strong currents – it’s 30 miles out in the Atlantic, not the flat Med we are used to swimming in.  We are just aiming to meet the 3 cut-off points along the way and finish within the 8 hour cut-off.

We are hoping to raise £1,500 which is the cost of a new defibrillator.  We have funded the event totally by ourselves so 100% of sponsorship goes to the charity.

Please take time to watch this video of the work Jay'sAIM are doing - I am so so proud of my lovely, very strong daughter Sam - the work they are doing is awesome - thanks so much for the donations so far xx

Losing Jay has left a huge hole in Sam and the family’s lives and we really want to help prevent this happening to others.  12 young people die from sudden cardiac arrest each week in the UK, also without prior symptoms.  Please donate whatever you can to support this amazing charity.

We know Jay will be with us on the day and we hope we can do him proud.

Thank you so much

Mogsy & Richard xx
