Currently, over 2,000 children drown in Vietnam every year, that is more than 5 every day. The World Health Organisation calls this the "silent epidemic" and believes these numbers to be conservative. Many of these tragedies could be avoided if the children had been taught how to swim.
Swim Vietnam has taught over 30,000 children to swim, installed 17 swimming pools, trained over 1,500 swim teachers and provided water safety education to over 245,000 school children. But more work needs to be done. Drowning is a preventable problem. Anyone can drown, but no one should. Just £20 will allow us to teach one more child to swim.
We are doing the Mighty Stride, 21 mile Kiltwalk in Edinburgh on 17th September to raise these much needed funds.
Jo - "I started Swim Vietnam 15 years ago. At that time the drowning figures were even higher. Due to the work of Swim Vietnam and other organisations these figures have come down, but they are still shockingly high. I want to take part in the Kiltwalk to raise funds because Swim Vietnam urgently needs financial support as they relaunch lifesaving swimming and water safety programs after Covid."
Trang - "I am from Vietnam, and I know swimming is not a priority for most families. Many people die every year, most of them are children whose families can't afford lessons. I want to participate in this event to help raise funds and remind people that anyone can drown, but no one should if we can prevent it."
David - "Vietnam has such a long coast line it is not hard to see why so many youngsters lose their lives at sea every year. Jo has achieved so much and is such an inspiration. Many lives have been saved as a result of her foundation. However, many more can still be saved. Simply learning to swim will save young lives and give so much joy too, so please do help if you can."
