Familia is an orphanage with a difference located about 50 km north of Kolkata. It is an amazing place run by inspiring people. Set up on the lines of a commune, there are four foster families looking after about 65 abandoned or parentless children , a set up which gives the children the closest alternative they would ever have to a natural family. There is also a farm (which the older children help with and which provides a lot of the food they eat) and a senior citizens home, a primary school for children of the surrouding villages and many out reach programmes are also run from Familia.
