OUR WOODLAND FLORA AND FAUNA ARE UNDER THREAT. CAN YOU HELP?
Surrey is the most wooded county in England and a particular stronghold for ancient woodland.
Ancient woodland is irreplaceable, home to more threatened species than any other habitat in the UK. It’s our version of the rainforest. Hundreds of years old, a single majestic English oak supports numerous species and is a nature reserve in itself. But, our woodlands – and the species that depend on them – are silently dying.
Over the last century many woodlands have been under managed and this has had a devastating impact on its wildlife. Woodland butterflies, such as the delicate wood white and pearl-bordered fritillary, have suffered a shocking 74% decline in numbers. There’s been a staggering 70% decline in woodland birds, such as wood warblers and pied flycatchers, and a 34% decline in ancient woodland plant diversity.
Without active management, our woods become invaded by dominant species and our native woodland flora and fauna are squeezed out! But we CAN do something to reverse this.
We know what works. As well as managing our own woodlands, we will work with other landowners and encourage traditional management so we can put an end to this drastic decline in species numbers.
Good woodland management is the only way to do this and we can offer practical help and advice. Can you help us raise £30,000 from this appeal to support our vital woodland work?
In 2011, the public outcry over attempts to privatise large parts of the UK’s public woodlands showed how much we value our woodlands and how we want to protect them. Please help us fight for Surrey’s woodlands and breathe life back into them.
Thank you.
