Volunteering - Crisis at Christmas 2019 · 23 December 2019 to 30 December 2019 ·

Face the freeze and bring warmth and hope to people facing homelessness this winter. Whether you brave an icy plunge, dare a brisk width or join friends in a relay race, your support will help people out of homelessness.

Story

Homelessness is devastating, dangerous and isolating.

People sleeping on the street are almost 17 times more likely to have been victims of violence. More than 1 in 3 people sleeping rough have been deliberately hit or kicked or experienced some other form of violence whilst homeless.

Homeless people are over 9 times more likely to take their own life than the general population.

And sadly, the number of homeless and hidden homeless is increasing.

On 25th January, I will be swimming in Hampstead Heath Lido - an open air pool with no heating. Yikes. I'll also be in fancy dress (although not quite sure what yet).

I am also once again volunteering for Crisis at Christmas this December, at a Day Centre where anyone can come and enjoy a safe space. Last year the centre and shift I was at provided the below over a week:

  • 2500 dinners
  • 70 healthcare cosultations
  • 21 physio appointments
  • 38 podietry visits
  • 38 dental appointments
  • 639 sets of clothing handed out
  • 180 warm showers
  • 297 luggage items safely looked after (usually all that persons worldly goods!)
  • 224 haircuts
  • 15 guests trained in first aid

There is also a safe space to sleep and keep warm. It's a eye opening, emotional and amazing experience. This will be my 3rd year volunteering, and am upping my volunteering to 5 days (including Christmas Day).

Each £28.87 raised will reserve a place at one of these centres.

Thank you so much for anything you can donate. It is going to such a good cause.
