Mencap wants a world where people with a learning disability gain an equal right to choice opportunity and respect. We believe that support for the families and carers of people with a learning disability is vital to achieving our vision

Story

Our (that is the main man Matt Caro and I) idea is to, on Saturday 15th August, visit the bottom of the 30 tallest buildings and structures in London and have our photo taken (which I know may be tricky but that's all part of the challenge). In addition, we shall visit the top of The Shard and maybe some other buildings.

We aim to complete the list, which will include numerous buildings in Canary Wharf and City of London, as well as The Shard, St Georges Wharf Tower, BT Tower, Euston Tower, Wembley Arch, a skyscraper in Stratford, residential blocks of The Barbican as well as those Eiffel Tower resembling masts in Crystal Palace and Croydon as quickly as possible but logistically, it will not be easy.

The other main man Rik Patel shall be our photographer and provide live evidence and updates throughout the day via our Facebook and Twitter pages - don't forget to follow them for news and updates in the build ip to the big day as well as during it!

So what does this challenge represent? Well, for people with learning disabilities, they can feel very small compared to tall achievements of others and/or tall challenges constantly facing them. Being able to get a photo at the top of a building would represent how with the right support and arrangements, these people can get 'on top of things' and feel 'taller' in terms of self-belief and confidence.

Also, there's no guarantee we shall be able to do all 30 buildings and structures in one day, as they're spread quite far apart when you think about it. We will really want to though, we may become anxious or stressed, we may lose belief at various stages that we'll be able to do it and shall certainly feel tired; all in all similar motions to what somebody with a learning disability may go through, particularly if their learning environment is not as inclusive or differentiated as it should be.

I have been there myself, I have had to overcome numerous disadvantages, some still mildly trouble me today, however I am now a newly qualified teacher myself  so whilst learning the job and facilitating learning, the issue of learning difficulties and learning development in general has been particularly on my mind over the last year.

We would be grateful if you could donate even a floor towards the skyscraper of pennies we hope to build... ...we hope to raise money as well as ourselves up The Shard!
