Hi! Thanks for clicking on our page... We are two 6th form students who are travelling to India this summer to Pune in order to work with the charity 'Karuna Trust' Karuna has many institutions set up all over the world in different countries, but we have chosen to go to India to help in a young girls orphanage of the lower caste in Indian society. 'Untouchables' are of the lower caste in society, which have been literally cast out of society due to the position they were born into. The girls are extremely well cared for by the permanent 'Karuna' staff but do not have much contact with people outside of the charity; this is where we hope to come in! The charity have suggested that we, as girls very close in age, if not the same age, as the 'untouchables', serve the purpose in India of being their companions while out there, as well as learning and observing and helping them in their daily routines and renovating the hostel itself. The girls ranging from 10-20 years old we hope will find it extremely fascinating and beneficial to meet people like us that they have only ever heard about, which hopefully, if the trip goes well, would set up a stronger connection between 'Karuna' and volunteers in the UK. Karuna has never allowed volunteers out before, so this is a novel experience for not only us, but the charity as well. Tallulah and Freya however, as students are attempting to raise money for the travel travel to India with any excess money that they raise being of course donated to the charity.
