We support families of poorly babies to make their time on the unit easier

Story

This is following the postponement and cancellation of previous marathons due to covid. I will be taking part in the Brathay Marathon in May 2022.

Our son was born by emergency c-section earlier this year. Although it should have been relatively straightforward things didnt turn out quite like that. When he was born he had difficulty breathing and had to be taken to the special care baby unit at North Tees Hospital. He was placed on CPAP to help him breathe and had to be placed in an incubator. I was quite poorly and was unable to see him and didnt for twelve hours. When I did get to see him I couldn't hold him, it was the middle of the night and I didn't have my family with me, but the nursing staff were fantastic and helped me cope with this, as all I wanted to do was make him better. That first weekend was a rollercoaster of emotions for our family. Neoangels and the staff on the unit were outstanding, my partner and I were able to finally hold him briefly 24 hours after he had been born, which was amazing. I learned that things can change by the hour, you can think things are progressing and then you suffer another setback but the staff and neoangels were there to support us and all the other families on the unit,  it's like we were one big family going through it together. Neoangels dedicated family room, equipped with toys and games, meant my other children could come and visit and have time with me to play and eat together while I was staying in the hospital. This room also provided them with much needed space away from the noise of all the machines and the intense environment. I cannot do them justice on here fully, other than to say, they provided real practical and emotional support to us all.

After a week, of what seemed like a lifetime, we were able to take our little boy home. He is now thriving and you would never know how poorly he had been in the beginning. We will be forever grateful to this small but powerful charity for the amazing love, care and support we received.

Tragically some babies never get to go home and NeoAngels are there to provide bereavement support to these families.

I am so very grateful for any contributions you can make to NeoAngels so they can use funds raised for vital medical equipment and to help families just like ours. Thank you.

Neoangels is dedicated to providing as much love, care and support as possible to our families. babies and staff on the Neonatal Unit at the University Hospital of North Tees. We ease the financial burden parents face by purchasing parking vouchers, helping with travel expenses and providing a hot meal in the hospital canteen daily for parents. We provide medical equipment, we have a specialist bereavement fund to look after families who lose their baby, we offer emotional support and we look after siblings too.
