Tammy's Voluntary Expedition To Nepal

Voluntary Expedition · 25 April 2017
My name is Tammy and I’m going on an expedition to help with the reconstruction of Nepal after the April 2015 earthquake that devastated many poor and rural communities. I’m signed up through Raleigh International – it’s a charitable organisation which empowers young people to make a lasting worthwhile change.
We are split into teams that are all assigned to different community projects, these communities are often very rural. Raleigh International remains the only volunteering organisation still working in these areas and so there is still a real need for their work.
Around 80% of homes in these communities were destroyed in the earthquake of April 2015. Due to the country’s high levels of inequality and poverty, rural communities suffered most. They lost the ability to provide for themselves - even the most basic needs of food, water and shelter. I'll be joining Raleigh to focus on strengthening the resilience of these communities for some of the challenges that lie ahead.
The work in Nepal focuses on delivering awareness raising, peer to peer education and skills training in key areas of community resilience, such as Water, Sanitation and Hygiene, Entrepreneurship Development and Community-based Natural Resource Management.
There are 4 teams that are sent off to 1 of the 4 villages. Each project in each community is unique and depends on each of their individual needs. However, they all have a common theme; they all centre around the rebuilding of communities after the earthquake.
Nepal is among the poorest countries in the world and the second poorest country in Asia, with 23.8% of its people living below the poverty line. Inequality remains a major challenge; only 6% of women are in formal employment, and only 10% of working women receive payment for their work.
Nepal is the fourth most climate vulnerable country in the world.
"It is surely, our responsibility to do everything within our power to create a planet that provides a home not just for us, but for all life on Earth" - Sir David Attenborough
I would really appreciate your donation. You’d be making a direct impact for the future of communities in Nepal.
