Story
In September, we are climbing Kilimanjaro to raise money for two excellent conservation charities: Wild Survivors and PAMS Foundation. The route that we are doing, the Machame (AKA the Whisky) route, totals 62 km from beginning to end and will take 6 days to complete. Its summit, Uhuru Peak, is the highest point in the continent of Africa (19,345 ft / 5,896 metres). To put this into perspective, this is higher than Everest Base Camp (which is 17,600 ft), and is closer in altitude to the next highest camp on Everest ('Camp 1') at 19,885 ft.
This will be a huge undertaking for us. You can see how we are preparing and keep up-to-date with our adventure via our blog: https://tanguaytrek.blogspot.co.uk/
Why support us and these two fantastic charities?
One elephant is slaughtered every 15 minutes in Africa. Over 123,000 elephants have been slaughtered in the last 3 years. Wild Survivors protects elephants from poachers and human-elephant conflict. The lesser known 'human-elephant conflict' can arise when hungry elephants roam across cultivated fields, often devastating the food supply and income of rural communities. When rural communities come face to face with herds of elephants, the encounters do not end well for either party.
Wild Survivors' latest project is seeking to eliminate human-elephant conflict with the help of bees! Elephants are scared of bees (who knew?!). The charity is therefore establishing bee hives around the perimeter of fields. This deters elephants, thereby preventing conflict, AND provides local farmers with a further source of food and income - honey!
PAMS Foundation supports biodiversity, wilderness, habitats and ecological processes. They have protected over 32,000 elephants, 7,000 giraffes, educated 1,120 children and confiscated 1,153 firearms.
Our climb will be in honour of Wayne Lotter, co-founder of PAMS Foundation, who was shot dead in Tanzania in August 2017 by an unidentified gunman. Wayne had received numerous death threats in his fight against poaching. He clearly cared deeply about the work that he did.
