As most of you may know, I was recently diagnosed with Cancer. I’ve had a major operation called a Whipple, which took 9 hours and am now awaiting Chemotherapy. Today, whilst scrolling through Facebook, I saw a post advertising that the Isle of Man were holding its first ever Roy Castle Tapathon. I honestly couldn’t believe it! I took part in 3 of these in Manchester, when I was young. The very first being with the man himself, Roy Castle, before he sadly passed. Upon seeing this post, I knew straight away I had to sign up. I’ve lost family members to this awful disease and, along with myself, have many friends fighting the battle. I’m doing this for me and all of them....Never Stop Fighting!

The Roy Castle Lung Cancer foundation began its story on the IoM as the Lung Cancer Fund in 1991 when it was set up by Professor Ray Donnelly who was the Thoracic surgeon for the islands residents. They wanted to bring RCLCF back to the island to better support the Lung shadow nurse and patients here both via on island services and off island research. However, just as they were gaining momentum, and about to recruit and expand operations they had to adjust quickly to the unexpected Coronavirus crisis which took the whole world by surprise, which meant their income reduced drastically whilst the demand for their online and phone patient helplines increased as the patients were having to shield from the danger of Covid 19. They desperately need to regain the momentum as soon as they possibly can to ensure that patient support in all forms continues and to make sure that they can restart the valuable research needed to try to beat this terrible disease once and for all.
