In the early hours of the 1st of November my grandad Mick lost his battle with cancer. It created the biggest hole in our family and an even bigger hole in our hearts. He was the light and laughter at the centre of it all and he is missed sorely.
He was diagnosed in June with bowel cancer, he had an operation on September the 9th which was supposed to get it all and he was supposed to have years left. So it came as a huge shock when he was rushed into hospital 6weeks later and we were told he had two weeks left. He tried really hard but he only managed five days.
Throughout his treatment the Macmillan nurses couldn’t do enough for us. My grandad, sister and mum all used the free counselling services. my grandad would go to the Macmillan centre a couple of times a week to either sit and talk to a nurse about the things he was experiencing, go to the art class and have help filling out forms correctly so he could get whatever other help he needed.
This whole experience would have been a lot, lot worse if he didn’t have the care and support of these nurses. There was always someone there with a cup of coffee and an ear for anything you wanted to talk about. They even came to see him after his operation and they were involved in his end of life care at home. My grandad would sing the Macmillan nurses praises constantly and I know he would be proud of me and my two sisters doing this and raising money for this amazing cause!
I want anyone who is ever affected by the terrible illness to be able to access the care, support and facilities that we were able to through this awful time.
