It’s unacceptable that more than half of people diagnosed with the deadliest common cancer die within three months. That’s why they need and deserve more. More research, more funding, more breakthroughs. More than hope. Together we’ll make that possible.

Story

Following his diagnosis with pancreatic cancer on 21 February 2014, Tony sadly passed away, peacefully in his sleep and surrounded by his wife and children, on the 8th May. Words will never be able to express just how special a man Tony was and how sorely he will be missed by his family and friends.
The family hope that by setting up this justgiving page, money can be raised and contributed to help raise awareness and fund research in aid of pancreatic cancer. Unfortunately for Tony and all other victims of this disease, this particular type of cancer is savage. This cancer hides itself so well that generally little, or nothing, can be done upon diagnosis.
The current statistics from Cancer Research UK demonstrate how badly more research and funding is needed to help fight the war against pancreatic cancer:
  • 8,773 people in the UK were diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2011.
  • There were 8,320 deaths from pancreatic cancer in the UK in 2011.
  • 3.7% of adult pancreatic cancer patients (3.6% of men and 3.8% of women) in England survived their cancer for five years or more in 2005-2009.
Tony will be taken home to Ireland following a service at St.Teresa's Church in Morden. The family have suggested that donations would be far more greatly appreciated than any flowers as these can't be sent home with Tony. For your kindness, generousity and your support, the Burke family thank you sincerely.
