In the years before he passed away, my father suffered from Alzheimer's. It's a terrible affliction, not just for the person who has it but also for those who have to care for the sufferer. Effectively it causes you to lose the person twice: once when they become someone you don't recognise and then again when they do pass.
My father was an inspirational figure in my life. He taught me about principles, values and integrity. Growing up he was the wisest man I knew and for as long as I could I always sought his counsel on anything I needed help with. Unfortunately in the five or so years before he passed away, Alzheimer's cruelly robbed us of the man we knew. I would like to do what I can to spare other families from going through that.
For this reason, I am running the marathon to raise funds for the excellent work of the Alzheimer's Society.
