Bowel Cancer Research Fund

Crohn's Fundraiser Team is raising money for University College London Hospitals Charity UK

BCR Fund · 30 May 2022

We're the official charity supporting patients, staff and research at University College London Hospitals (UCLH) NHS Foundation Trust. We focus on four main areas. Supporting patient care Training and developing staff Environment and equipment Advancing research.

Story

We are a group of friends who have been affected by bowel cancer and/or Crohn's disease either personally or through the eyes of a loved one. We owe our/their lives to the medical expertise delivered by Professor Richard Cohen MD, FRCS. Professor of Surgery and a Consultant at UCLH.

So when we heard that the pioneering research projects Richard and Dr. Mohammad Eddama, Senior Clinical Research Fellow at UCL have been undertaking for the early detection of bowel cancer before symptoms occur and chances of a cure are very high; plus research on a drug to modulate the debilitating inflammatory response in Crohn’s disease required an injection of funds to continue, we came together to create this fundraiser - as with your help, together, we could make a huge difference to lives of so many.

Please visit: www.bcrfund.co.uk to find out more about the research programme, why it's vital the research continues, and how your donation will be used.

SUMMARY OF THE RESEARCH YOUR DONATION WILL HELP FUND

1. UCL research project on a novel epigenetic pro-drug for the early, accurate detection of bowel cancer.

  • Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second cause of UK cancer deaths and the incidence is rising among younger people.
  • Bowel cancer is treatable and curable especially if diagnosed early, why the need for early detection of cases is dire, not only to prolong life span but to offer a better quality of life.
  • This research is designed to push the boundaries of frontiers of science in pursuit of identifying colorectal cancer cases early, in the golden time window when chances of cure are very high.
  • The funds will be used to quantitatively and qualitatively validate the potential role of microvesicles as biomarkers for colorectal neoplasia, enabling the early identification of CRC, allowing effective treatment and cure.

2. UCL research on a novel epigenetic pro-drug for modulating the inflammatory response in Crohn's disease.

  • Patients suffering from inflammatory conditions, such as Crohn’s disease are burdened by an imbalanced immune response.
  • Currently, patients living with Crohn’s disease spend their entire life receiving medical care to alleviate their symptoms.
  • Despite the advancement in medical sciences, these conditions remain incurable.
  • Our approach to modulating the inflammation in Crohn’s disease is by modifying the immune cells’ response by changing the way cells would produce the proteins that exacerbate the response.
  • Novel immunomodulatory therapy could have a wide implication for the treatment of patients suffering from a variety of systemic inflammatory responses and other inflammatory conditions.

We've all seen and benefitted from the rapid development of a Covid-19 vaccine, what if we could replicate that inspiring focus and drive... by helping to fund Richard & Mo to push the boundaries of frontiers of science in pursuit of beating Bowel Cancer and Crohn's disease?

Please follow and share this page to spread awareness of our fund and to support us in reaching our funding target, so Richard and Mo can maintain this potentially life-saving work.

With your donation, together, we could make a huge difference to the lives of so many people - thank you.
