The Team Oxygenaddict ALPE-ATHON!
We wanted to say THANK YOU to Team Oxygenaddict’s frontline healthcare workers that have, quite frankly, had a year that few of us can even begin to comprehend.
So, we asked our frontline workers who they'd like us to raise money for. And they collectively decided on mental health charity MIND. They are a fantastic and relevant cause for both healthcare workers, and the general public - especially with mental health support becoming increasingly important during and after the Coronavirus pandemic.
According to MIND, 60% of adults and 68% of young people have said their mental health has got worse during the Coronavirus pandemic. From MIND's "The Mental Health Emergency" study:
"The coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic will leave a deep and lasting scar on the mental health of millions in this country. The devastating loss of life, the impact of lockdown and loneliness, and the inevitable recession that lies ahead will affect all of us. Prioritising mental health has never been more critical than it is now. New mental health problems have developed as a result of the pandemic, and existing mental health problems have gotten worse."
So, what are we doing?
The ALPE-ATHON!
In Team Oxygenaddict we LOVE Alpe du Zwift! It's a virtual cycling climb that accurately replicates the 21 hairpins and 1000m+ of climbing of the famous Alpe d'Huez in the French Alps, taking anywhere from 50 - 100 minutes to climb.
So, across the weekend of February 6-7, as a team, we’ll be donning the lycra, applying excessive amounts of chamois cream and eating enough flapjacks to feed a small country as we collectively climb Alpe du Zwift as many times as possible!
For many, one ascent of the Alpe is a huge physical and mental achievement. Others will be attempting multiple ascents over the weekend, with a select few even attempting a virtual Everest (climbing the equivalent height of everest - 8849m in one sitting!)
AND, fittingly, with the height of Everest being 8849m, we're setting our sights high and aiming to raise £8,849!
Every £ donated counts - This is a hugely important cause that is literally a lifeline for many people in "normal" times, let alone as we begin to see the true mental health impact of the pandemic.
