We are embarking on this trek to raise money for the wonderful small organisation named KOPILA-Nepal. The money will go towards supporting two projects;
-Psychosocial wellbeing for women and girls in Nepal
- The Safe Community project
THE FACTS
-Women and girls are discriminated against in nutrition, health, education, paid work and decision-making power from household to national level.
-Women's literacy is 42.5%.
-Girl's participation in secondary school is 38%.
-Women are less likely to be employed for cash or in-kind: 81% of men vs. 30% of women.
-Only 46% of married women participate in decisions concerning their own health care, major household purchases and visits to relatives.
-Although accurate figures are difficult to obtain, from my experience and the experience of local NGO's in Nepal, the majority of women experience domestic violence in some form.
WHAT WE CAN DO
In a country where you can rent an apartment for £50 a month, our pounds go a really long way. By supporting local grass-roots organisations who have a strong understanding in the field, we can help women in Nepal raise their voices together for lasting change.
