Two years ago, on Good Friday 2015, my daughter Coco was rushed to hospital after an AVM in her brain burst causing a devastating stroke. We didn't know she had the AVM so her collapse was a complete shock. One minute she was laughing with her brother the next she was unconscious. She was just six years old.
Coco was in theatre at Great Ormond Street Hospital for eight hours, the doctors did not expect her to survive. Incredibly, she did survive that night but sadly the stroke had caused a severe brain injury. She was minimally conscious in intensive care for 3 very long weeks. We were advised by the doctors that she may never fully regain consciousness.
Then she smiled! And from that moment Coco has been a superstar trying her best to recover from what has been a devastating injury to her brain.
When she left hospital she couldn’t talk, eat, walk or even hold her head up. Three months after her stroke, Coco moved to The Children’s Trust in Tadworth, Surrey for specialist brain injury rehabilitation. They set a programme of therapy help her regain the skills she had lost.
After 7 months at The Children’s Trust we finally brought Coco home. Coco was not yet ready for a return to mainstream education full-time so she started at The Woodstar School run by the charity CPotential.
The wonderful staff at The Woodstar School have been instrumental in continuing her rehabilitation and I am doing this bike ride for them to show my gratitude. With help from The Woodstar School and CPotential Coco has a chance at an independent life full of wonder and possibility.
