As kids we always enjoyed cycling with dad. When he retired he rediscovered his love of cycling and spent hours pedalling around the Malvern Hills. He put our fitness levels to shame and we thought he was invincible. Earlier this year he became very unwell and we discovered he had myeloma. Working as a consultant haematologist I look after people with myeloma on a daily basis, it was a huge shock to discover the illness had directly affected my family. 

Since specialising in haematology 7 years ago I have seen the life expectancy and quality of life for patients with myeloma improve dramatically. Much of this is thanks to the research and development of new treatments, supported by Myeloma UK. 

From a professional perspective I knew that myeloma UK provided fantastic resources for patients, their families and for healthcare professionals. On a personal basis my family have found the information and support provided by the charity invaluable.

There have been some scary and stressful moments along the way but following chemotherapy and a stem cell transplant dad is currently well and back out on his bike. As a family we wanted to mark the end of a roller coaster year, capitalise on his current good health and give something back to Myeloma UK. Getting on our bikes alongside dad seemed a fitting challenge. On 25th of May Team Collings (James, dad and I) will be cycling from London to Paris to raise money for Myeloma UK. We are funding the costs of participating in the ride, 100% of any donations will benefit the charity. Any donations would be much appreciated- thanks!
