The use of sexual violence as a weapon of war has been happening for many years in Congo. Eastern Congo has been described as the 'Rape Capital of the world' and the prevalence and intensity of all forms of sexual violence means that its one of the most dangerous places to live if you are a woman.

The Panzi Hospital has treated over 35,000 survivors of sexual violence since it opened in 2004. The hospital provides free medical treatment as well as emotional and psychological support.

What is happening in Eastern Congo is so horrific that I wont go into details for fear of making you feel sick but if you would like more information there are some good (but upsetting) documentaries on Youtube. Also you can check out these useful websites:
