Story
Hello and thank you so much clicking this far. Please read the reasons why Rob and Abi are taking part in this 26 miles gruelling trek through the Brecon Beacons on the 8 July 2023 and why this cause is so important and close to their hearts.
In January of this year Rob’s mum received the diagnosis of mixed vascular dementia and Alzheimer’s at the age of 70. As a family they knew something had not been quite right for a while, but it was still a shock to hear the devastating news.
Rita (Rob’s mum) left her home of 45 years last year to move closer to her eldest son in Cambridge. She had hoped to spend more quality time with her three granddaughters and support her son and daughter-in-law with child care. However, the reality is that she now needs carers in every day and is the one being supported and looked after. Although Rita will never get over this horrible disease, the funds raised through Trek26 will help support those families affected, and will continue to research treatments and cures for dementia.
Rob and Abi stumbled across Trek26 after one too many glasses of wine, and both agreed that it was a great idea and an opportunity to raise funds for a cause close to their hearts. Rita and Abi had got on like a house on fire when Rita was living with Rob briefly, with Abi checking in on her whilst Rob was away… quickly becoming best friends.
The number of people with Dementia/Alzheimers is set to grow, and it is projected that 1/3 people born today will get it. The Alzheimers Society is working towards a world where dementia will no longer devastate life. They are currently doing this by supporting those affected by the disease, funding dementia research and campaigning on behalf of all those affected.
