Conquer the O2 to Conquer Sickle Cell · 23 April 2022 ·
Did you know 50-90% of the children born with sickle cell in Nigeria do not live to see their 5th Birthday?
This is particularly sad given that there is treatment available that can help those diagnosed with the condition manage symptoms and live normal lives.
Unfortunately, diagnosis requires awareness, facilities and equipment, and the treatment requires money. In a region where the average salary is less than a dollar a day, it is unaffordable.
We are climbing the dome on 23 April 2022 in conjunction with members of Rotary Club Stratford to raise money to set up a sickle cells screening centre in Imo State, Nigeria. A region that currently has no treatment or screening centres.
The Rotary Club Stratford is aiming to raise £150,00 overall to set up the centre. The centre will promote awareness and provide screening to young people within the region to allow them to make informed choices when planning their families.
Kim, Paula, Hazel and I would be grateful for any contribution you are able to make.
If you want to contribute and would like all your donation to go to the charity, please ensure you enter 0000 when submitting your donation when prompted, otherwise 15% of your donation will go to JustGiving.
For those unaware of sickle cell:
Sickle cell is a disease that is particularly common within people from African and Caribbean backgrounds.
The disease produces unusually shaped red blood cells which do not live as long as healthy blood cells and can cause blockages in blood vessels.
Symptoms of sickle cell include severe pain, increased risk of infection and anaemia. The disease can also lead to a wide range of other conditions such as delayed puberty, strokes, leg ulcers, serious lung problems, eyesight problems, high blood pressure and kidney or urinary problem to name a few.
