Story
10% of the population have heartburn
10% of these have Barrett’s oesophagus
And 7% of these get Cancer
Team McCord consisting of Mimi, Kate and Johnny are running in this years London Marathon on the 22 April in memory of Mike McCord, a deeply loved husband and father. This year is the tenth anniversary of Mike’s death and the three McCord’s are running to raise as much money as possible for Heartburn Cancer Awareness & Support (HCAS) Charity No. 1136413. Mike died in 2002 nine weeks after he was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer. Long term persistent heartburn, which he suffered from throughout his adult life, was his only symptom. Mike’s death was preventable had he been aware of the danger of heartburn and benefited from an earlier diagnosis.
Mimi founded the McCord Oesophageal Cancer Fund in 2003, which has now been re-launched as Heartburn Cancer Awareness & Support. The charity aims to increase public and professional awareness of the significance of the common symptom of heartburn and its link to cancer of the oesophagus. Cancer of the oesophagus is the most rapidly increasing cancer in the UK today. Despite the best modern treatments survival from this cancer is appalling, mainly because diagnosis is made at too late a stage. Through a programme of education at a local, regional and national level we hope to make a significant impact on the early diagnosis and treatment of oesophageal cancer, which will help to fulfil our ultimate goal of saving 1000 lives per year from this disease.
