Sailors’ Society Three Peaks Challenge 2010
Cargill Ocean Transportation Team USA
WHY SPONSOR US? · The world’s seafarers are responsible for 95% of the trade upon which the global economy depends. · Each month, an average of 25 seafarers are killed and ten ships lost worldwide. In many cases, when a seafarer dies, his/her family is not entitled to any form of compensation or subsistence payment, all income ceases, and monies owing to the deceased are rarely paid to the family. It is then they hope that a seafarer charity, such as the Sailor’s Society, will provide them the support they desperately need. · The Society operates in 30 countries and 100 ports throughout the world. It exists to enhance and enrich seafarers’ lives and improve the quality of their well being by replacing isolation with belonging. The Society has been caring for seafarers, their dependants and children for 191 years. · The Society, through its own facilities, provides vital services of communication, practical facilities (including accommodation, telephones, internet connections, television, reading materials, etc.), faith aid, welfare support, and advice wherever and whenever needed. · The Society’s Chaplains are the seafarers’ point of contact in port and can help with any practical issues. They bring seafarers in closer contact with their homes by giving them access to the Internet and phones. They are honest brokers for human rights, a support when sick or injured, a friendly face and a representative during times of trouble, providing access to translators, legal representation, welfare or spiritual support 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year. Its Chaplains, in conjunction with other organizations, endeavour to visit all ships that call in ports throughout the world. · We don’t often take time to appreciate the difficult and vital job undertaken by those at sea. The conditions at sea vary from the fairly sumptuous to downright squalid. Even in well-managed ships, seafarers face long hours, hard work, the dangers of the sea (including piracy) and the loneliness of separation from their loved ones for months at a time. THIS IS OUR CHANCE TO GIVE BACK TO THOSE THAT GREATLY CONTRIBUTE TO THE LIVELIHOOD OF OUR FAMILIES AND NEIGHBORS
