We are part of a team of staff that work at one of the very few designated pulmonary vascular disease units (PVDU) in the UK. Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a rare and very serious disease that currently has no cure. In limited cases, surgery may be an option, but usually it's a case of managing symptoms and slowing down the progression of the disease. As staff on the PVDU at Sheffield, we witness what our patients have to go through every day. We see people at their best and their worst and understand how hard it can be to live with an illness like PH. We see the struggles of people dealing with an "invisible illness" that most people can't see, don't understand or simply don't know about. The Pulmonary Hypertension Association UK (PHA UK) is dedicated to improving the lives of people with PH. They aim to raise awareness of the disease, they fund research into finding new treatments, they pay for staff to be specially trained and fund some of our activity and equipment on the PVDU. Most of all, they are there for our patients when they need them. Whether it's for information about PH, someone to talk to about their condition or advice about how they can get the help they need, the PHA UK are always on hand. We know that whatever amount we raise will be spent with our patients' best interests at heart.
